4-H Sew by the Sea

It's now time to register for 'Sew By The Sea' Fashion Revue that will replace 'Spring Into Cotton' this year.

The event will take place at the Carteret County Extension office, unless the contest outgrows those rooms, and in which case it will be moved to an alternate (larger) location in Morehead City.

The event will be APRIL 24th and the entry fee is $12, which includes the participant's lunch. Additional lunches may be ordered for $6 and commemorative t-shirts are available for $10.

Entry forms are due to the Cartaret County Extension Office (address is on the entry form) by APRIL 9.

There are a couple of major changes from Spring Into Cotton. Items entered do not have to be made of cotton - any material is acceptable. Cloverbuds (youth ages 5 - 8) are welcome to participate and if there is enough participation, we will have a workshop just for them.

Note: this is also the same weekend as our County 4-H Presentations. Please contact the Wake County 4-H office if participating in Sew by the Sea will cause you to miss 4-H Presentation Day.

NC 4-H Photo Contest is Up and Running - Enter Now!

Calling All Shutterbugs!

Each year, NC 4-H sponsors a photo contest for 4-Hers. This exhibit is open to (and only to) all North Carolina 4-H members ages 9-19 as of 1/1/10.

All entries must be postmarked no later than June 8, 2010.

All entry photos must have been taken by the 4-Her submitting the entry during the previous year.

Two age divisions: Junior (ages 9-12) OR Senior (ages 13-19).

Three categories and you can submit a max of ONE photo in each of the categories. Categories are: "4-H in Action," "Nature's Beauty," "4-H Family"). The same image may be entered by the same 4-H in more than one of the categories but two separate photos and two separate entry forms must be submitted if you're going this route.

SEPARATE and COMPLETED entry forms must accompany EACH individual photo entered. If entering in more than one category, then submit a separate form for EACH category entered. DO NOT use just one form for multiple photos, even if the same person is submitting them.

Photos may be in color OR black-and-white. Any size 8x10 inches or smaller will be accepted.

Entry prints may be made from negatives, slides, or digital media. Original image media MUST accompany all prints!

The following rules apply:

Digital Media
Images made from digital media MUST include a print of that image AND a copy of the digital file on a disk, CD or DVD.
Negatives
Images made from a negative MUST include the original negative AND a photographic print from it. Do NOT cut negative strips into single frames and do NOT use paper clips directly on negatives!
Slides
Images made from a slide do not require a print of that slide, but it is easier for judging purposes if a print is provided. The original slide itself, however, MUST be submitted.

Please do not submit photos in a frame. Loose photos are preferred.

Retreat for 4-H Young Alumni

If you are or know of any young adults ages 19 - 25 who would like to get to know other 4-H Young Alumni and participate in a service project at the same time, there is a retreat for this age group at Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center and the registration fee is only $15. You don't even have to be a member of the Alumni group to participate!

2010 Volunteer Leader's Conference

The 2010 NC 4-H Volunteer Leaders’ Conference is happening February 5-7, 2010, at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Conference Center in Research Triangle Park. It's s short drive and the trainings are good ones!

Saturday features more than 40 offerings of workshops in either 90-minute or 60-minute settings with topics ranging from healthy eating, to recruiting volunteers across the generations, to real activities you can use with your groups!

4-H Cookbooks on Pre-Press Order

The NorthCarolina4-H Centennial Cookbook will be coming off the press in January!

The cookbook includes 400+ Blue Ribbon Recipes collected from every 4-H decade. It also features photos depicting 4-H foods and nutritionprojects throughout the decades.

Details for the Holiday Classic Benefit Show Announced!

There was a special meeting held on Tuesday, September 15 to discuss the December open horse show. Thanks to those who came!

The show is officially named the "1st Annual Holiday Classic Open Horse Show" to Benefit The Wolfpack Western Riding Club and The North Central District 4-H Horse Program.

The open horse show will be held on December 5 and 6th at the Gov. James B. Hunt Horse Complex.

Here are four ways to help!

Sell Sponsorships. There are different levels of sponsorships; from class sponsors to show sponsors and more. You can find the sponsorship form on the website. Even if you are not planning to show at this show, PLEASE sell sponsorships, ask family members, friends, businesses, farms, etc!

Advertise and Encourage Participation. We need YOU to advertise and encourage participation at this event. Print out the fliers from the website, print the class list and post them, email it out to everyone you know, etc.

Attend the Event! Try your best to come to show at the event. Remember this is not just a youth show, this is an open horse show for all ages!

Volunteer. We need volunteers!!!!!! If you are interested in a volunteer position you can contact the 4-H office at (919) 250-1093 or heather.tart@co.wake.nc.us.

Silliman Wins Urban Forestry Award

Mary Silliman, daughter of Ben and Betty Silliman of Apex, received the "Outstanding Individual Grand Award" from the 2009 Urban Forestry Awards program. She will be recognized and presented with her award at an Urban Forestry Awards Banquet in Winston-Salem in September.

Mary has worked closely with the Town of Apex in tree-planting initiatives, and plans to continue her work in the fall.

Congratulations to Mary for her hard work and service to the community and the environment!

Dietrich Elected State Reporter at Congress

Ann Margaret Dietrich, a Senior 4-Her from Wake County, was elected to the office of State 4-H Reporter during Congress in July. She is the daughter of Geoff and Sarah Dietrich and has participated in 4-H projects ranging from Citizenship to Electric to Animal Science.

Ann Margaret will be starting college at NCSU this fall, so she will be close to campus for all of her new duties as 4-H Reporter!

Congratulations to Ann Margaret on this accomplishment! We are proud to call you a Wake County 4-Her and we know that you will work hard to serve 4-H at the state level!

Dietrich Attends Electric Congress

A small but enthusiastic delegation from Wake attended the annual 4-H Electric Congress July 13-15 at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Two hundred twenty 4‑H’ers, adult leaders and Cooperative Extension agents from 59 counties attended the three‑day event.

Since 1947, Progress Energy, Duke Energy and Dominion North Carolina Power have sponsored the annual congress to emphasize energy conservation and safe electricity use.

The 4-H electric energy program is one of the most popular activities among Tar Heel 4-H’ers. The 4-H program is conducted by North Carolina Cooperative Extension at North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State universities.

More than 239,000 young people between the ages of 5 and 19 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities each year with the help of 23,000 adult and youth volunteers.

State Fair Competitions Announced!

The State Fair Premium Book is now online!

It has information in regards to the various competitions that are part of the State Fair each year, including ones that are specific to youth AND also ones that are specific to 4-H.

Many youth choose to enter the Wake County 4-H Youth Fair Day before the State Fair. More details on this year's Youth Fair Day events will be coming by the first week of August, so stay tuned!

Hello from NC 4-H Congress!

NC 4-H "Centennial" Congress is up and running!

Our Wake delegates had a great first day that included Opening Ceremonies and the Parade of Counties, Fashion Revue, dinner at the dining hall, and a quick trip out to North Hills to pick up supplies for the week!

Today is a very big day since this is the day of the big Centennial Birthday celebration at the Fairgrounds! The daytime today is busy with 4-H State-level Presentations at Athens Dr. High School (good luck Branden, Mary, Ann Margaret and Zack!) and workshops. Teens from Wake are teaching teens from across the state Irish Dance steps. (Go Alli and Logan!).

We are looking forward to seeing the displays that represent the past, present, and future of NC 4-H, as well as the "Rockin' Clover Bash" that's going to be afterwards and should be full of faces from the past and present of NC 4-H.

N Central District - Horse Camp Reimbursements Available!

The 4-Her needs to send a letter to the District via Morgan Maness, Rockingham Co 4-H Agent, talking about their week of camp and asking for reimbursement. Morgan MUST have this letter in her hands (not postmarked) by August 13th of this year.

Spots Still Available for Youth Dairy Day 2009

Time: 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Location: Rowan County Fairgrounds, Salisbury, NC

Ages: Youth ages 5 to 13

Overview: This is the second year for this event that is designed to educate youth ages 5 to 13 about the animal and food aspects of the North Carolina dairy industry and to spark their interest in 4-H dairy youth activities.

Youth will attend various "hands on" 30 minute workshops to learn aboutthe following topics: the dairy industry, modern milk production, basic veterinary care of dairy animals, dairy foods and nutrition, hands-on experience making butter, smoothies, and ice cream.

There is no charge to participate in our NC Junior Youth Dairy Day.

This event is sponsored by the North Carolina Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (NC PDCA).

Lunch will be provided.

Participants will need to bring Med Form and Consent Form (call 4-H office at 919-250-1093 for details).

Participants are responsible for own travel to and from the event.

Drama Camps for Military Youth

There are still spots available for the NC OMK Amazing Drama Experience Camp being held 29 June - 3 July 2009 at Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina.

This camp will provide hands-on workshops, panel discussions, distinguished speakers and small group dialogues will help you take a closer look at every aspect of creative work to plan, produce and perform in a small stage show.

Experienced directors and producers will instruct participants in hands-on sessions to improve stage and staging skills throughout the week. Working in small groups, participants will plan, prepare and present a show on the final day of the event, to which parents, guardians, and other special guests will be invited.

Military youth ages 12 to 16 who are interested in the Performing Arts (vocal, dance, drama, staging, etc.) are encouraged to apply.

This week will be fun and exciting and educational. Come meet and work with fellow artist during this exciting event!

Horse Show this Weekend

Just a reminder that all groups/clubs with an EIN number need to file their e-Postcard with the IRS! Deadline is Friday, May 15th!

A lot of our clubs/groups are getting error messages when you attempt to log on to file. If this happens, there is a 1-877 number that comes up on the screen.

If you call that number, they will help decide if there is a simple issue with the EIN, or if you need to do something differently. Yes, they're the IRS, but they're pretty helpful, so don't sweat it!

If you have problems with the process, please let me know and we'll try to troubleshoot.

Remember, when you file, you should not put the county 4-H office or any staff's name on the paperwork - the club/group should be listed to a volunteer.

IRS e-Postcards due by 5/15/09

It's time for 4-H Clubs and Groups with an EIN number to file an e-Postcard with the IRS.

This is a simple online form that reports funds held by a group and other basic data.

You can access the form online at:

Remember: if you have funds (one cent or more!), you'll need to have an EIN (obtained from the IRS). Our "tax year" runs Jan 1 - Dec 31, so you'll need to file an e-Postacard no later than May 15, 2009.

Please email heather.tart@co.wake.nc.us with any questions. Some folks have experienced technical issues with the site and we will work with the IRS and NC 4-H to work through any challenges that arise!

Hunter Ed Course Offered

Wake County 4-H will host a Hunter Education course on May 19 - 21 for any interested youth and adults. There is no minimum age requirement to attend the course, but it is taught at the sixth-grade level and there is a test at the end of the course.

This is strongly recommended for youth who wish to participate in the Target Shooting Sports program and required for anyone who intends to hunt in NC.

The course will be taught by an instructor from the Wildlife Resources Commission.

Course times are 6PM - 9:30 each evening and participants must complete all sessions. All materials are provided, but no food or drinks will be provided, though participants are welcome to bring your own food and drink.

There is no fee for the course.

A huge THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS to our three volunteers - Donna LeSage, Bryan Wynns, and Jill Ruvidich, who attended the NC 4-H Target Sports Instructor training this weekend at Camp Sertoma!

Donna LeSage and myself completed the course and became 4-H certified pistol instructors and Bryan Wynns and Jill Ruvidich completed the course to become 4-H certified rifle instructors. We hope to begin some air pistol and air rifle activities soon, and are working on some additional opportunities for youth.

We are still working through some program planning, safety, and risk management challenges, but hope to have a Wake 4-H Target Shooting Sports Club up and running soon!

Operation Purple Camp: Ages 8-16 yrs

This camp is for families in a 15 month deployment window. To register they will need to go to http://www.nmfa.org/. The registration deadline is coming up soon (April 20th) so they need to sign up soon if they are interested. The dates for this camp are Aug 2-7th, 2009. If your families are not necessarily in a deployment window, they can still sign up but will be considered in the last teir of priority.

Operation Military Kid/Cloverbud: Ages 5-8 yrs

This camp does not have any deployment guidelines. Any kid in a military family is welcome to register. They will need to fill out a normal registration form and an additional form that I have attached to this email. They will send both forms to me directly. The dates for this camp are July 12-15th.

Free Drugs Uncovered Event for Parents and Community Members (18+ ONLY)

Wake County 4-H is proud to partner with Poe Health Education Center to bring you a very informative and interactive presentation regarding teens and drugs. This includes a display of a teen bedroom that can be analyzed for signs of drug use.

This FREE event will take place on Thursday April 23rd from 6:00-8:00pm at the Commons Building.

This program is exclusively for adults and you must be 18 years of age to attend. Preregistration is required since spaces are limited!

Please forward this information to any clients, community partners, volunteers, faith partners, friends, neighbors, relatives and anyone else you might think of so that they may participate in such a wonderful training opportunity - you are welcome to attend as well!

The information will be presented in Spanish as well as we have an interpreter who will be available to help those who need assistance.

Everyone is welcome to arrive a half hour early so that they may view the bedroom and the items displayed within.

Deadline for Horse Artistic Expression Entries Approaching!

Just a reminder that the deadline for the Horse Artistic Expression Contest is approaching!

Some of the entries have to be turned in with the entry form (mostly the writing-related ones) and others must be brought to the State Show in July (most of the bigger artwork pieces) but ALL entries are due POSTMARKED TO THE ADDRESS ON THE ENTRY FORM no later than May 1st.

ALL entry forms have to have an Extension Agent's signature on the form before they are postmarked, so please make sure that you get them to me in time for me to sign them before your mail them. Please call or email when you'd like to come by so that I can make sure I'm here or someone else can be a designee. You can also fax entry forms to me at (919) 250-1097.

NC/VA Horse Leaders' Conference

Just a reminder of a training opportunity for leaders!

NC Cooperative Extension co-sponsors the 4-H Horse Leader Training Conference with Virginia Cooperative Extension each year.

The conference rotates annually between Virginia and NC Cooperative Extension as the host, and the conference is in VA this year.

Three NC volunteer leaders and some of the Equine Horse Husbandry Staff will be teaching topics at the Virginia conference which will be held April 3-5, 2009 at the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Camp in Wirtz, VA.

It's time to start preparing for the 2009 NC 4-H Horse Artistic Expression Contests!

You do NOT have to own a horse or participate in horse programs to participate!

Entries must be postmarked by May 1, 2009 and they have to be signed by an Extension Agent, so please get these in soon! Individuals will need to get the forms signed by our office (fax to 250-1097 or email is fine!) and then mail with check to the address on the entry form.

Be sure to read the details for the contests you're competing in - the written entries have the be turned in with the entry forms, but some other contest have craft items that you bring to the NC 4-H State Horse Show.

Enter the NC 4-H Congress Photo Contest

It's time to begin preparations for the 2009 North Carolina 4-H Photography Contest!

This year’s new category will be “4-H Centennial” and can include any images from events or celebrations related to the year’s centennial activities.

NCSU will begin accepting entries for the 2009 4-H Photography Contest now and will continue through tuesday, June 9, 2009. Winning entries will be displayed at 4-H Congress in July. The purpose of this exhibition is to provide a showcase of 4-H members' photographic accomplishments.

After Congress, the winning photos will be displayed at selected meetings and events throughout the year. Winning entries from past years can be viewed online here.

Every 4-H’er between ages 9 and 19 with an interest in photography is invited to participate!

Entries for the 2009 contest must be postmarked NO LATER THAN June 9, 2009, and should be original images created from June 2008 to June 2009.

Contest categories this year include our standard "4-H in Action" and "Nature's Beauty" categories, with a new category this year of "4-H Centennial." Each category will be divided into a Junior (Ages 9-12) and
Senior (Ages 13-19) division.

Summer Opportunity in D.C. for High School Girls!

Just got information on this program today and wanted to share it even though their FIRM deadline is Feb 16th!

This is not a 4-H-specific program, so please feel free to forward to others!

Running Start is accepting applications for their 2009 Young Woman's Political Leadership Retreat.

Running Start encourages high school girls from across the country to channel their leadership into politics. Participants will meet extraordinary women leaders of diverse backgrounds and learn the importance of having more women in political leadership. Even if the girls are not interested in politics, this is a great program way for them to build self-esteem, practice public speaking and learn to collaborate with other young women.

It is open to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school

The program will be held at American University, Washington D.C. July 15 - 19, 2009.

The conference, sponsored by the State Board of Education and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, will be held March 30 to April 1 at the Sheraton Greensboro Hotel at Four Seasons/Joseph S. Koury Convention Center, Greensboro.

Three students will be selected to make presentations during the opening session scheduled for March 30 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Wake County has a record number of Horse Bowl teams this year! Fifteen teams will compete at District competition on February 14th in Guilford County!

The 2008 Teen Talk Lock-In is an overnight event of fun and exciting activities for teens, exploring many of the challenges they face in the search for healthy relationships.

This educational forum is designed to provide teens with information. Our goal is to improve communication between parents and teens around the many issues in their day-to-day lives, including self-esteem, decision making and sexual health.

Performing Arts Troupe Auditions

In 2009, 4-H’ers and leaders from across the state will have the opportunity to be involved in a new version of the 4-H Performing Arts Troupe, which got it start waaay back in the '80s.

One of the first goals of the Troupe will be to rehearse and stage an original musical theatre production written to celebrate the 100 year history of 4-H in North Carolina as part of the Centennial Celebration at 4-H Congress.

Current 4-H members ages 12-18 will have the opportunity to audition for the 30-40 performing roles in the Troupe. 4-H’ers who are more interested in the technical components of the show can apply to work with our technical staff in the areas of costumes, props, set, lighting and sound. Applications for performing and technical students will be available beginning in January with three regional auditions being planned for March.

NC 4-H and the Troupe are also offering opportunities for 10-12 adult volunteer leaders to help bring this dream to fruition. The application form for volunteer leaders for the Troupe is attached to this email.

Tentative Schedule:

November, 2008 – Adult applications out and due in by January 15, 2009

January 5 – February 23 – Applications accepted from 4-H’ers (ages 12-18)

March, 2009 – Regional auditions (details TBD)

Early April – Selections of performing and technical students will be finalized.

May 8-10 – A weekend retreat at BJP for adults and youth members - mandatory.

Additional rehearsals will be held the weekend before Congress (July 18-19),
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of Congress with a premier performance
tentatively set for Thursday evening.

Costs: There will be a $300 participant fee for all 4-H performers and techs.
There will be no participant fee for adult leaders.

All performers, technical students and adult volunteers must register for
Congress which requires an additional registration fee.

We are in the beginning stages, but now is a great time to join!

Clubs will form soon, and we are looking for adults to serve on our Wake County 4-H Shooting Sports Council to help us get going.

The Robocats 4-H club, from Apex, will be presenting at "Astronomy Days" at the NC Museum of Natural Science on Saturday, Jan 26 and Sunday, Jan 27.

The club, which consists of students from Apex Middle School and has a group that competes in robotics competitions across the state, will demonstrate some of their skills, and share about what they've learned about science, technology, and engineering, as well as how they've grown through their 4-H experience.

4-H camps and other areas of 4-H will also be on display at the event.

We need your help to get hundreds of books judged!

You can judge as long as you: are 17+ years of age, and are not entering a book yourself and do not have a youth or club member entering a book in the category you're judging!

We expect over 100 books from Wake County and need judges for all book categories and age divisions! If you can help judge in mid to late February, please email heather.tart@co.wake.nc.us.

The folks on campus also need help juding at state level. They have 1,200 books to judge in ONE WEEKEND! If you can help them out during March 28-30th, please email heather.tart@co.wake.nc.us. Lodging will be provided for those coming from outside the Triangle area.

Club Finances Training on Jan 30th from 6:30 - 8:30PM at the Cameron Village Library.
VERY IMPORTANT. (Rooms 202 and 202A).
This is very important for any clubs with financial holdings (i.e. bank accounts) and clubs that ask for donations/contributions throughout the year. Kate Guerdat will join us to go over the new financial guidelines and IRS information for 2008. Clubs are strongly encouraged to send at least one youth and one adult to this training! Staff are also welcome - this is a fantastic way to meet lots of our club leaders at one time and will also be useful for any staff leading a club/group that asks for or accepts donations on behalf of the club throughout the year. Clubs will be getting
a flyer and letter in the mail regarding this training and 4-H staff have a copy of the flyer in your mailbox.

Standard Reminders for Clubs:
-All 4-H clubs should have a charter! If a club has never had, have lost,or otherwise doesn't have a charter, please contact the 4-H office immediately.

-Club leaders should ensure that the 4-H office has an Enrollment Form and Med Form completed for each club member. These should be turned in to the 4-H office (make copies for club files if you wish).

-If you have new leaders in your club this year, please make sure they complete a Volunteer Application and background check through the 4-H office.

-Clubs with any financial holdings at all will need to get an EIN number from the IRS http://www.irs.gov%20details/ Details on this will be covered at the Finances training on 1/30/08.

-Insurance for club youth can be purchased through American Income Life online and for very low cost - $1 for community club youth per year, $2 for horse club youth per year. http://www.americanincomelife.com/4h2.htm

-2008 Calendars will be mailed to clubs this week and will also be posted on wake.ces.ncsu.edu and on this blog.

2007 Making Magic Motorsports Expo Success

Live auctions, teenage drag racers, NASCAR, live music, jumprope teams, inflatables for the kids....it was a busy day at the Dorton Arena on the NC State Fairgrounds on Saturday, January 5, 2008!

The event raised money to support sending at-risk youth to summer camp and year-round educational activities. Approximately 2,000 youth have been impacted through Making Magic and we look forward to seeing that number climb even more in the future!
